McCorkle Place fronts Franklin Street and is part of the University. It is named for the Rev Samuel Eusebius McCorkle of Rowan County who dedicated the cornerstone at Old East, which created the University, with these words:
"May this hill be for religion as the ancient hill of Zion; and for literature and the muses may it surpass the ancient Parnassus!"
